After the wonderful day has passed and you're back from the incredible honeymoon, the everday realities of being Mr. and Mrs. begin! You've merged your lives together in almost every way, but have you also merged your personal finances?
Engaged couples and newlyweds are often nervous to talk about their personal finances with each other. It's important to overcome this because arguments related to money or personal finances are all too common among married couples. You should discuss how each person handles their money. If you haven't done so already, make it a point to work on how to be financially compatible with each other. Communicating about money issues is critical for the long-term
success of any marriage.
While you may not always agree
with your spouse about finances, it's important to listen to their opinions. Don't try to wear down their resistance if you don't agree with their opinion - everyone is entitled to have their own idea. When you keep an open mind, you may even find another's perspective can be helpful.
Start sharing details about each others personal finances once you've set a date for the wedding. If financial planning isn't your thing, share the task by deciding who will do what, now and going forward into the marriage.
Here are some of the ways that newly engaged, or just married couples can work toward merging their personal finances:
- Make a promise to consult with each other before
making any major purchases. If you can't talk to your spouse about it beforehand, then don't buy it!
- Always decide together how much will be spent on a major purchase, before the purchase. The two of you are married now, so you should also act like it financially!
- Save on bank fees! Paychecks can go into one account rather than two separate accounts. Use this account to pay for your household bills.
- Spend time together paying the bills. One person can make the payment, the other person record it. Use this time to also listen to each other and discuss finances and future goals, including personal and career ideas.
